Overview:
We have attended classes on and are looking forward to using Natural Childbirth techniques. Please do not offer us pain medication. We strongly prefer a vaginal delivery instead of a cesarean. We understand that circumstances may not allow for the accommodation of these goals, but please discuss any suggested interventions with both of us and obtain our verbal consent before initiating any procedure. We greatly appreciate your cooperation.

Environment:
• We would like only (Spouses Name and/or Doula) present for labor and birth.
• We would like the lights dim, minimal noise and door closed for privacy.
• We would also like to take pictures during the labor and birth as we wish.

Labor & Delivery:
• The mother would like the freedom to be up out of bed as much as possible during labor, depending on her needs. NO Internal Monitors Please.
• We would like vaginal exams kept to a minimum and preformed as gently as possible.
• The mother would like to handle pain through massage, relaxation, shower or whirlpool tub.
• We would like NO augmentation of labor such as pitocin or amniotomy unless non-medical techniques are not effective. Please allow membranes to rupture spontaneously.
• We would like NO analgesia/anesthesia unless medically needed or we ask for it.
• We would like the choice of positions for pushing (squatting, birth stools, birthing ball etc.)
• The mother would rather risk a tear than have an episiotomy. We would like the use of warm compresses, massage and coaching for slow birth of baby’s head and positioning.
• If assistance is needed during delivery, please use suction and NO forceps.

After Birth:
• We would like to have the baby placed immediately on the mother’s chest with skin-to-skin contact after the birth and for the first 30-60 minutes following the birth. We would like to try breastfeeding the baby as soon as possible.
• We would like to wait until the umbilical cord stops pulsating before it is clamped and cut.

A Birth Story

Tags: , , , ,

DOB: Tuesday, May 12th @ 7:49 pm
Weight: 8 lbs 4 oz
Length: 21 1/2 inches

Well it our birth story began 9 days past our due date. For 3 weeks straight I was only dilated 1 cm and effaced 50% so we unfortunately had to be induced. We were hoping for the natural onset of of labor, but I guess God had other plans.

We went to the hospital at 11:45 pm on Monday night and then they started running the IV and antibotic through my veins at Midnight. (I had to have an antiboitc because I was Group B Strep Positive). Then at 2:00 am on Tuesday the inserted a Cytotec pill to help soften and dilate my cervix but there was no progression and still no contractions.

At 6:00 am they started Pitocin through my IV and before you know it I was having contractions 1 MINUTE APART with NO REST. The nurses even had to back off the dosage because little Owen was showing signs of stress. The contractions got harder and more painful each hour and I was still getting them EVERY MINUTE. At 7:00 am the Dr. checked me for dilation and there was still not much progression (2 cm).

At 9:30 am the Dr. broke my water and for the next 6 HOURS I had hard painful contraction (STILL EVERY MINUTE) and by 3:00 pm I was still not dilated any further than 4 cm and only 90% effaced. When I heard only 4 cm I knew that this baby was not coming out anytime soon. I did not see an end in sight and I was in severe pain so I cried for an epidural. Who knows how much longer my body would have put up this fight. And who knew my body would not want to give birth. (I envy those short labor people).

I was given the epidural at 3:30 pm and within 2 hours I was dilated to 9 1/2 cm. PRAISE GOD!!! I have never felt so much relief and happiness in my life. I stared pushing around 6:30 pm and finally I could see a light at the end of the tunnel when I saw a little brown haired baby poking through.

Unfortunately that’s not the end of the story. Our little guy was face up instead of face down like he was suppose to be (he was stubborn) so it took a little longer delivering him than we had hoped even though I was fully dilated and his head was in sight. They had to bring out the suction extractor, and that alone did not help our boy out. I ended up having an episiotomy and tore to a 3rd degree. (OUCH- felt that one for months). But it was worth it all; our little boy finally arrived, lungs fully capable of telling us how he felt, at 7:49 pm.

They placed him on my chest immediately after birth and we were able to be with him for almost 2 hours before they took him to the nursery to be cleaned. Our little guy figured out how to nurse right away and latched on perfectly. WHAT A BLESSING! I couldn’t have asked for a better baby and on top of that he was gorgeous. (I just have to brag!)

Our son was perfectly healthy and happy and he slept, ate, cried, pooped, and peed wonderfully! As for me; I was sore for several months from the episiotomy and from nursing but I was did surprisingly well. My stomach almost fully contracted after 6 days and I lost about 15 pounds right away so that was AWESOME! And as for the daddy; he is completly in love with this baby! He never wants to put him down. I actually think my husband cried with joy more than our son. We are loving our life with our new son! Thank you Lord for your many blessings.

And Thank You! to all of you who gave cards, gifts, snacks and flowers and for coming to visit our new little family in the hospital. We love you all!

Water Birth

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

A couple of years ago when I became pregnant with my first daughter, Rhagan, I had no idea what to expect during this totally amazing journey. Immediately I began researching and digging to find everything I could so I could know what was happening to my body and how the little life inside of my being was growing. In this search I found something I wasn’t looking for, because I didn’t know I should have been looking for it. This “something” was choices about birth. Choices of how, where, and in what environment I would labor and my baby would enter our world.
The options seemed endless as I search online and in books and magazines. I could have my baby the standard American way in a hospital, with an IV and immobility. I could have my baby in a birthing center with professional midwives available to aid me, but I would still have the saftey net of being close to an emergency center. I could have my baby at home with a midwife. Of I could have a free birth and labor and birth at home with no professional present at all.
All of these choices and then there are a lot of inside details about each option. Can I walk, squat, eat, drink, use hydrotherapy for pain relief? Do I want an epidural? Do I want to actually birth my baby into the water?
These were all questions I pondered. I decided I wanted to have a water birth. I didn’t know where or how I would accomplish this but I knew that is what I wanted if at all possible. As I began my research of how to do this I came to the disappointment that certain places would let you labor in the water but would not let you birth in the water. At that time I was not comfortable with having my baby at home. I live in Ohio and there are no free standing birth centers, so then I surrendered to the hospital birth.
After my birth experience with Rhagan, I will be having my next baby at home and in water, God willing. I already found a midwife to attend the next birth at home!
Water birth provides many benefits for the laboring mother and the baby. The book Choosing Waterbirth by Lakshmi Bertum is a great resource for this topic. Water has been used for hydrotherapy for hundreds of years. The weightlessness water provides takes much pressure off of the the mother’s pelvic region during labor. Emersion in the warm water allows muscles in the abdomen, back, and perinium to relax, allowing for a more comfortable labor.
The benefit it provides for the baby during birth is the transition from the warmth of the uterus to the warmth of the water and then a gradual transition into cool air. This versus an immediate cold shock, blinding lights, and a thunder of sounds. How terrifying it must be, and just to think, this is the first out of uterus experience for the little baby. I suggest reading Birth Withouth Violence by Frederick Leboyer. This is a poetic approach about the experience of birth from the viewpoint of the baby. Life changing.
Water birth is what I believe to be a dream birth and next time, sometime soon, I will strive for that dream once again.
