The Beautiful Piano

Tags: , , , ,

In Theory, to play the piano, all you have to do is push the right keys to make a beautiful sound. No matter who plays an F on a piano, the sound is identical. A piano key is ¾ inch wide which is nive because even a five year old can learn to play. Therefore, piano has been the instrument of choice for a child. Physically the musical process is very easy- Also adults find is easy as well.

Adults and children alike, can understand and learn to play a simple two-note chord, consisting of any white key, skipping one, and playing the next. With minimal effort a people can plunk out a tune that they recognize, giving them at least a preview of what playing music is actually like. For example, Mary Had a Little Lamb, is a matter of a few moments for any child to learn in Piano by Number. Don’t get me wrong, the piano takes a lot of time and patience to master, but once you do, it is worth it. The piano is one of the most versatile instruments out there and one of the most beautiful sounding.

Playing the piano was always a dream of mine. My mother put me in piano lessons as a child and for some odd reason, I wanted nothing to do with it. I felt that my hands were too small and I couldn’t reach the keys. I also becoming increasingly obsessed with sports so do you think I honestly wanted to sit down at a piano? Not so much, but today I look back and I regret that decision. My mother still sits down to play this beautiful instrument and it makes me envy her talent and the joy she has as she sings along. I love the sounds that echo through my parents home when I am visiting. It brings back memories of when I was a child and my mother would practice choruses and hymns before Sunday Worship. I love my mother- and I love her Piano.

One of these days I will sit down at a piano and try once more for me; for my mother.

Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Tags: , , , ,

During projects like remodeling, reconstruction and demolition, materials containing asbestos may release microsfibers that can be inhaled into the lungs. When inhaled, asbestos fibers may cause asbestosis, a severe scarring of the lungs, or Mesothelioma , a deadly cancer that may affect the lining of the chest and lungs, the abdomen, and even the heart.

Saddly, Asbestos is the main risk factor for developing Mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral made of silicate. Asbestos could be found in products like navy ships, electrical & plumbing, insulation, tile flooring, roofing materials, gloves and even brake pads. The list goes on and on- many things had traces of Asbestos. Since asbestos and mesothelioma have been linked, the use of these types of materials have almost completely stopped. But unfortunately, asbestos can still be found in some products today.

Diagnosis of Mesothelioma is difficult because most of the symptoms are similar to other diseases. Some including chest and back pain, difficulty in swallowing, impaired breathing, persistent cough, fever, nausea and weight loss. Other symptoms may include swelling of the abdomen, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, swollen feet, irregular bowels and vomiting.

Because Mesothelioma Cancer is rare, many doctors have little or no experience treating this disease. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Mesothelioma does not grow as a single mass. Instead it tends to spread along surfaces, nerves, and blood vessels, which is extremely hard to treat. Surgery is not likely to cure the cancer, but it might extend the patient’s life. Chemotherapy for this disease is given to relieve symptoms, not to cure the cancer (radiation treatment doesn’t help much for mesothelioma, and the need to treat a large part of the lung leads to problems with lung damage). But radiation is able to kill small areas of cancer that cannot be seen and removed during surgery. It can also be used as a way to ease symptoms such as shortness of breath, pain, bleeding, or trouble with swallowing.

Thankfully, there is hope- People are surviving mesothelioma!

Pollution Prevention

Why is all our water so polluted?

Water pollution can come from many different places, but the most common reason that our creeks, rivers, lakes and beaches are so pollouted is from pollutants/trash that flow into storm drains. After storm water and urban runoff like water from washing your car or dog or watering your lawn even debrie from construction sites flow into the storm drains, these pollutants get sent to the nearest creek, river, lake or ocean. That means any pollutant on the street gets carried to our bodies of water and eventually the ocean. Pretty sad to think about isn’t it?

Thankfully, many companies are trying to solve this problem. Like the Advanced Civil Group; A Disabled Veteran Owned Civil Engineering Company. The have developed what is called, SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan). Their moto is “The Only Thing in the Drain should be the Rain”. Their plan is to keep dirt, chemicals, and trash out of the city sewer system and out of natural water systems. They are a licensed contractor with the right qualifications for preparing and implementing these plans all while striving to save our environment for generations to come. It is a wonderful cause!

Advanced Civil Group is a full service civil design and construction firm based in Orange County. So this means, most of the SWPPP jobs are done in Southern California. They service Orange County, San Diego County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and Los Angeles County.

SWAPP is doing their part by using barriers to keep the rain water from picking up excessive amounts of sediment, now lets help them keep our earth clean. Even if their isn’t a storm, make sure you don’t let water full of pollutants like dirt, chemicals, soaps and grass clippings run down the street and into your storm drain. Make sure to clean up after your pet in your yard or when you take it out for a walk. Convince other to use less water when they wash their cars. Also, ask them to use a bucket with water and soap to wash the car, then drain the dirty/soapy water down the sink or in the grass. And Please, throw all your trash in a garbage can and not on the street, sidewalk or grass. And last, the shorter the trips in your car, the less the air is polluted. Thanks for the help!
